Sobriety Calculator

Enter the day you quit drinking. See your days, weeks and hours alcohol-free, your totals if you ever start over, money not spent and a printable milestone card. Nothing you type leaves your browser. Not a medical tool: stopping heavy drinking suddenly can be dangerous, so talk to a doctor.

Not a medical tool. Stopping heavy drinking suddenly can be dangerous — talk to a doctor. NIAAA, a U.S. government agency, calls alcohol withdrawal potentially life-threatening (source).

This sobriety calculator counts how long you have gone without alcohol. Enter your quit date and it shows the days, weeks and hours of your streak, your next milestone date, and an estimate of the drinks and money not spent. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. Your dates stay on your device.

Most counters lose your history when you start over. This one keeps it. Add an earlier stretch and it stays in your totals: total alcohol-free days, longest streak and current streak, side by side. A slip changes your current streak, not the days you already had.

How to use the Sobriety Calculator

  1. Pick your quit date, the first day of your current alcohol-free streak. The days, weeks and hours appear at once.
  2. If you have had earlier alcohol-free stretches, type them in the Earlier alcohol-free stretches box, one per line, as two dates: 2026-01-05 to 2026-03-20. The first date is the first alcohol-free day. The second is the day you drank again. Skip this box if this is your first streak.
  3. Set Drinks per week before you quit and Cost of one drink. These are your own numbers, so change them to match your life. Set the drinks to 0 to hide the money lines.
  4. Open More options to add the time you stopped (for the hours count), pick a different date to count up to, or count the quit date as day 1.
  5. Read the milestone card in the results. Press Print / save as PDF to get a one-page card with a box to tick as each milestone is reached.

The tool keeps nothing between visits. Write your quit date and earlier stretches down, or print the card, so you can enter them again next time. If the date field looks odd in your browser, type the date as YYYY-MM-DD. Changing any box updates every number straight away, so you can try different dates or drink counts and watch the totals change.

How many days sober am I?

Your days are the whole days from your quit date to today. If you quit on January 1 and today is April 11, that is 100 days (14 weeks and 2 days, or 2,400 hours). The quit date itself is day 0, as on most counters. If you prefer to call the quit date day 1, switch on Count the quit date as day 1 under More options and the count goes up by one.

What happens to my count if I drink again?

Your current streak starts over from the new date. Your history does not. Enter the old stretch in the earlier-stretches box and the calculator adds it to your totals. A worked example: you stopped on 2026-01-05, drank again on 2026-03-20, then stopped again on 2026-06-01. On 2026-07-01 the tool shows a current streak of 30 days, a longest streak of 74 days and 104 alcohol-free days in total across two stretches. Each stretch runs from its first day up to, but not including, the day you drank again.

How are the milestone dates worked out?

The card counts forward from your current quit date: 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, 90 and 180 days, then 1, 2, 3 and 5 years. A milestone date is the quit date plus that many days. The status column says “Reached”, “Today” or how many days are left. The card changes when you change the quit date, so print it again after a restart.

How is money saved worked out?

Drinks not had are your typical drinks per week, divided by 7, times your total alcohol-free days. Money not spent is that number of drinks times the cost of one drink. With 14 drinks a week at $7 each, 100 days comes to 200 drinks and $1,400. It is an estimate based on what you told the tool, not a bank record. A standard US drink holds 14 grams of pure alcohol: 12 fluid ounces of regular beer, 5 of wine or 1.5 of spirits (NIAAA).

Where can I get help to quit drinking?

Talk to a doctor, especially if you drink every day or heavily, because stopping suddenly can be dangerous. In the US you can use the SAMHSA National Helpline. Outside the US, Find a Helpline lists free, confidential helplines in more than 175 countries. This page does not give medical advice.

How this tool works and where the numbers come from

Days are whole calendar days between your quit date and today, counted with calendar arithmetic so clock changes never shift the number. Each alcohol-free stretch runs from its first day up to, but not including, the day you drank again, and the stretches are added up. Drinks and money are your own typical week multiplied by those days. The tool records dates and does nothing else: it gives no medical advice and makes no claims about your health.

Frequently asked questions

Is my quit date saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser. It does not save your dates, does not use cookies for them and does not put them in the page address. Close the tab and they are gone, so note them down. The only thing this page can send is your email address, and only if you press Notify me in the app box.

Does the calculator count today?

Yes. Today is included in the hours and, with a quit date of today, the count is 0 days. Turn on “Count the quit date as day 1” if you want it to read 1.

Can I use it for a streak that is not alcohol?

The maths is only dates, so it works for any streak you want to count. The drinks and money lines are for alcohol, so set drinks to 0 to hide them.

Why does it ask for earlier stretches?

So that starting over does not wipe your history. The totals line adds every stretch together and the longest streak line shows your best one.

Is this a medical tool?

No. It counts days. It does not diagnose anything, give advice or track your health. If you are worried about your drinking, talk to a doctor.
